By listening to the music by the three Sacramento-based Americana bands, I was able to get a feel for each of their styles. I wanted to present Americana in a way that was different from the typical western-rockabilly aesthetic.
Focusing on the commonalities between the bands, I began to brainstorm how I could portray Americana in Sacramento. Thinking about Sacramento's nature and wildlife, I wanted to portray a rattlesnake, deciding to soften the image by adding the state flower, poppies, to the composition. The flower's color lent itself to the one-color palette, allowing the poster to stand out without being overwhelming. To appeal as an all-ages show, I drew the rattlesnake with its mouth closed to be more welcoming and youngster-friendly.
