In honor of The Weeknd’s latest studio album, After Hours, and the persona he has encompassed to promote it, I created an editorial piece for the album review by Pitchfork’s Isabelia Herrera.
In each music video and live performance for After Hours, The Weeknd advances the story of the villain he has created for himself; the lovelorn, drug-induced, out-of-reality, disturbing figure aimlessly roaming the Vegas Strip, leaving traces of himself along the way.
The first spread shows the evidence left behind by his persona as he moves through the haze; the gauze has fallen off his nose, the glass of scotch is shattered on the ground. The second spread serves as a flashback to the beginning of his evening, when he began to transition into the villain.
